CDBurnerXP – free, full-featured, slick

Although its title suggests CDBurnerXP deals only with CDs, it is also a full-featured DVD writer, including Blue-Ray and HD-DVDs. New computers usually arrive with disc software pre-installed, like Roxio, Sonic or Cyberlink. But these are basic editions of full-featured software. And, they tend to annoy users with update offers. CDBurnerXP will not present pop-ups asking you to upgrade to the paid version, because there isn’t one. It has all the features you could ask for. The only feature lacking is a sophisticated audio ripper, although CDBurnerXP will perform a straight copy of audio files, including mixed types of audio and data files (with or without silent spaces). It will also print CD covers with files / tracks listed. LightScribe printing is supported. [For those who wish to copy a music CD such that the track titles are actually the names of the songs, try Foobar2000 which can download the albums song titles from an online database. Then use CDBurnerXP to make the correctly titled discs.]

CDBurnerXP works on Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 server / Vista and Windows7. A portable version is available, along with a runtime version that does not require pre-installation of the .NET Framework. A physical disk costs $ 10.95 (downloads are free).

Play lists can be imported – M3U and WPL files. If ReplayGain information is available on the CD, or on the individual music tracks, that feature is also supported. [For those who are already troubled by variable volume levels from their MP3 files, try MP3Gain which is designed to normalize loudness levels where ReplayGain is not available.]

ISO images (burning to disc or creating an iso from files) are no problem. Creating a bootable disc is another handy feature.

About

Action Selection

CDBurnerXP handles older disc file formats, as well as the newest ones (e.g.; ISO 9660, Joliet, UDF). One of these formats allows file names longer than 64 characters, enabling users to include long descriptions in their filenames, that will not be truncated by the burning software.

Audio Compilation

An embedded audio player is included in CDBurnerXP.
