The first time using WinStatDir may give the impression it is just a gimmicky and overly colourful interface. But a visual display of the contents of a storage drive (in block style), is extremely useful. Not only are users able to quickly identify the types of files (by colour), but the whole disk (and every file or folder in it) is displayed in one single panel. Let the program work for a while before losing patience. It takes a few minutes to run through thousands of folders and tens of thousands of files. In the example below, all mp4 files are green in colour, all jpgs are red, and all avi files are purple, and so on... This colour coding continues for a total ten different colours, then defaults to grey unless the user wishes to assign more colours manually to the file type palette. Moreover, clicking on one of the coloured, “pillow-like” files will jump to the exact location of the file as shown in the tree structure file directory directly above the colourful, “artsy” representation. The size of files corresponds to the area of the coloured rectangles. If colours are grouped together, it means that these files are all in the same folder. A zoom tool focuses solely on the folder that this file is contained in, expanding the view. ![]() The bottom status line shows the full path to the clicked-on file (which can be copied). RAM usage just tells how much memory is being used by WinStatDir itself, not the size of the file. This kind of display is great for finding orphan photos, or really large video files that need to be offloaded. One user found a huge temporary file that should have been removed by Windows. Press Delete to send a file to the Recycle Bin, or Shift-Del to by-pass the Recycle Bin (i.e.; delete forever). The top menu provides quick access to the full properties of the file, or to a command prompt string, or a full view in Explorer.
