Quicksys RegDefrag – compresses & defrags the registry

This free program will analyze the various registry files on your computer, and report on the amount of space saved by defragging and compressing the registry. In the Options panel, it is wise to first check off the “Create a Restore Point” and “Check for Update” boxes.

My laptop system has eleven registry files in places I wasn’t aware of before. Quicksys RegDefrag allows you to carry on with the actual defragmentation process, or to abort. After defragmentation, a full HTML report may be generated and stored as a file.

The program’s setup file installs like any other – making registry entries. Even though a portable (no-install) version is available, uninstalling the setup version leaves no trace of the program.

Analysis of my eleven registry files (58 MB total) took a little over one minute. Quicksys RegDefrag reported that this data could be compressed to 90 %, or down to 52 MB. The compression process was very fast, after the Restore Point had been created. For the process to complete, the operating system required a restart.

What the program does not do is remove unused or redundant entries in the registry. There are lots of other free programs for that. However, empty registry cells will be deleted during the compaction process.

The computer may not be a lot faster as a result of bringing together these file fragments, but Windows itself will have easier access to registry entries. The interface is uncomplicated and easy to use.
