Enlarge bitmap images, (even highly pixelated or jaggy), small images, with good-looking, large, smoothed images; and with a further options to create images looking as though they were painted by an artist. In the default settings, the software is extremely easy to use. It includes further, optional, adjustments for cropping, sharpening, de-noising, flattening and dithering. The results are so impressive, you might even use SmillaEnlarger to improve the readability of pixilated text, perhaps to the point it could be OCR’d. Simply paste, or drag, or open an image; then hit the Preview button to see if you like the effect. If so, click on “Enlarge & Save”. The full image is then processed and saved in the originating directory with an identifying suffix. Couldn’t be easier! Before (original image is only 603 by 327 pixels): ![]() After: (3015 by 1635 pixels when set at 500% Zoom level) ![]() SmillaEnlarger’s features do not end with the above default settings. Click on the drop-down Enlarger Parameter box to choose other presets. Or, click on the Parameter tab to fine tune many aspects of the smoothing algorithm. Play with the Zoom slider in order to affect the output dimensions and aspect ratio. If only a portion of the image needs to be enlarged and smoothed, select the Cropping tab and drawing a cropping area with the left mouse button (default is a square crop but many other rectangles are available from combo box). And you can fine tune the output dimensions of the crop using the “Output Dimensions” drop-down menu. ![]() After processing, only the cropped area will be saved, as a smoothed 558 by 314 pixels image (when enlarged by the shown 329% Zoom factor). Batch processing of a number of images can be achieved by dropping a folder into the image window. All images will enter a job queue and be processed under the same settings. Supported file types: JPG, GIF, TIF, BMP, PPM and PNG. The default saving format is JPG, for which you can set a different quality level (compression level). Go to “File… Preferences” to change the JPG quality, or to change the file format to TIF, BMP, PPM, or PNG (or to change the default format). After downloading and unzipping the program, you can move the main folder to any location, then create a shortcut to the main executable file: SmillaEnlarger.exe, which is inside the SmillaEnlarger folder. You’ll notice another executable file: SmillaEnlarger-Cl.exe, which is for command line operation of the program. The ReadMe.rtf file has full documentation about how to use the command line tool and how to run the program on a Mac.
